Bamboo lampshade is an ongoing project about searching for the potential use of design objects. A hexagonal bamboo piece is converted from Chinese kitchenware for making shark fin soup into lighting installation with unique aesthetic. The design is derived from building a module first: each individual piece is rolled into a cylinder and held in position by knots. With radial arrangement, the assembly of multiple cylinders turns into a primary form which can be manipulated to transform into a more complex pattern.
At the end, the result is endless.
Old Begets New
With goal to reveal the forgotten value of hexagonal bamboo piece and repurpose it with new interpretation, the series Old Begets New, a collaboration between Cotton Car and SOIL, was on display at deTour 2016, Hong Kong. Through the three-part of installation, it encourages viewer engagement and collective experience. At the center of the rectilinear exhibition space, a cluster of bamboo cylinders in various sizes dangles from the ceiling, creating visual stimulus and attraction. In front of the walls are four vertical sculptures which comprise bamboo forms. They can be rotated by hands and produce an interplay of moving shadows. To further the interaction between viewers and the artworks, the bamboo balls which are initially polyhedra-shaped can be modified into different contours with simple push and pull.
